Santo André Ship-Museum
About
It’s time to embark on an experience that transports you to the past and immerses you in one of the most significant professions in the Aveiro Region. You can’t leave our destination without visiting the Santo André Ship-Museum.
For several decades, cod fishing was an important economic activity in the region, with a considerable number of families having members dedicated to it. The Santo André Ship-Museum, located in Ílhavo, next to Jardim Oudinot, was built in 1948 in the Netherlands and commissioned by the Aveiro Fishing Company. At the time, it was one of the most modern vessels in the Portuguese cod fishing fleet.
Today, the ship is open for visitors, allowing you to observe and interact with the materials used, explore the spaces where the fishermen slept, cooked, and socialized, and learn more about the importance of cod fishing in the region. In this beautiful example of Portugal’s maritime history, you can also visit the engine room and witness the ship’s heart.
Did you know that in 2023, the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo received the “Museology” award from APOM – the Portuguese Association of Museology – for the “Requalification and renovation of the Museology of the Santo André Ship-Museum”?
This is yet another reason to visit this great space!
